Artists’ illustrations for Africa
Three illustrated calendars born from a collaboration between Bas Bleu and Medici con l’Africa CUAMM, an NGO operating for the right to health in Sub-Saharan Africa. The calendars promote and support the NGO’s activities using arstists’ illustrations and original texts.
A publishing and storytelling project involving international illustrators – from Brazil to Slovenia, from Spain to Italy – to introduce a living Africa, intense and faraway from cliché showing all the different shades and styles of existence.
Illustrators who worked for the three editions of the calendar are:
Donata Dal Molin Casagrande, Florence Faval, Svjetlan Junacovic, Alessandro Sanna, Eleanor Davis, Simona Mulazzani, Maurizio Olivotto, Mandana Sadat, Damjan Stepancic, Beppe Giacobbe, Javier Zabala, Mariana Zanetti
2012 – Africa garden/maze
A calendar that traces a route through the garden-maze of Africa: its needs, its wealth, its potentialities. Each month of the year corresponds to an African plant or flower, and their characteristics are used to evoke some of the essential aspects of this immense continent, and how they relate to the activity of Medici con l’Africa Cuamm. Illustrations and texts together introduce in an original way ideas on cultural encounters, care and health.

2013 – Meeting tastes
A calendar dedicated to African cuisine and its recipes, but also a container for stories, which reveal a generous and incredibly various Africa. Food is the connecting theme. It’s a way for all of us to meet people, a means for conviviality and knowledge.
Each month the calendar showcases a recipe from an African country in which Medici con l’Africa Cuamm is working, accompanied by a short story collected by its volunteers.
The calendar changes at the end of the year: just cutting part of the pages you can still use it as a small recipe book even after the 2013.
Illustrated by: Eleanor Davis, Simona Mulazzani, Maurizio Olivotto, Mandana Sadat.
2014 – Travelling
A journey that takes you to Africa, a continent humming with emotions and strong colours.
A story that invites you to leave home, to discover, to wonder at new places, as if you were really travelling. The result is a map of words and images that doesn’t trace boundaries or routes, but tries to evoke places and physical and spiritual discoveries.
Illustrated by: Damjan Stepancic, Beppe Giacobbe, Javier Zabala, Mariana Zanetti.
The original illustrations were exhibited at the Museo Diocesano in Padua in the exhibition “I colori del sacro. Il Viaggio”, as part of the international illustration review (18 January to 2 June 2014).
